11 Romance Movies I love
I have a confession, I’m not a romantic movie person. Not really. For example, I am not a fan of Gone with the Wind—but that’s me. I know many who adore this movie. You want to know why I don’t like it? There’s no happy ever after. Yes, I know, I know, the whole point of it was for Scarlett to stand on her own two feet.
But it didn’t resonate with me.
Now of course, I’m an Action/Adventure movie person; movies like 300, Lord of the Rings, The Avengers, Thor, Captain America, X-men are my type of thing. (Yeah, I used to collect Marvel Comics—so there is that). I can argue that there is some romance in there…but I digress.
But I do have a few; well more than a few and here they are no particular order;
Pride and Prejudice. BBC version—Colin Firth, need I say more?! (technically it was a “television series” but I insist it was a movie.)
Pretty Woman. Yes, I adore remakes of old tales, and this one was a wonderfully done. A Cinderalla story of a hooker and a high powered businessman—impossible odds, but Julie Roberts was a delightful hooker, and Richard Gere really does charming well.
27 Dresses. –Technically, this is a “romantic comedy” another thing I don’t usually watch. But, I loved, loved the heroine; always a bridesmaid and never a bride and her closet of horrid bridesmaid dresses. The hero was simply a nice guy …heck, I just loved it.
Ever After—Another take on the Cinderella story, with a bit more realism, but included a dastardly Step-mother played by Angelica Houston. Drew Barrymore as the “Cinderella” was wonderful, and I always watch it when I’m in need of a happy ending.
10 things I hate about you—with Heath Ledger, and Julia Stiles; probably one of the best Beauty and the Beast stories I’ve ever seen. Sure, it’s a teen movie, but sometimes they are even better than adult ones. The dialogue was exquisite.
GiGi—with Audrey Hepburn, if you haven’t seen it—you must. About a young woman who falls for her Guardian as she is being trained as a Courtesan. Just yes. One of my favorites.
Sound of Music—yes. I LOVE this movie; the songs, the people. Julie Andrews to me is just a class act—and even though Christopher Plummer may not have cared for his part I really, really thought he was a fantastically sexy Captain Von Trapp.
Sense and Sensibility—The story of a second family; displaced after the death of their father—the home taken over by their half-brother forcing them to live in a cottage. It stars Emma Thompson, (wonderful actress) and Hugh Grant. Although, I admit; who I *really* watched it for was Alan Rickman. He was delightful; charming strong and his voice….sigh. This is a gentle romance—with everyone getting a happy ending.
The Holiday—Whocan resist Jude Law? This is a story of two women with messed up love lives who swap their houses over Christmas; and find new loves. It’s wonderful, sweet, and happy. I watch it at least yearly.
The Proposal: Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock are two of my favorite actors. Sandra plays a high up Executive in a publishing house, and Ryan is her competent frustrated writer lackey-this changes when she is faced with deportation back to Canada she talks him in to being her fiancé; they just didn’t anticipate finding love. Great dialogue and interaction….you have to see it.
This Means War: Chris Pine and Tom Hardy are CIA operatives fighting for the hand of Reese Witherspoon. This is a fun movie. Period. Well yeah, and Chris and Tom; worth the viewing.
What is YOUR favorite romantic movie? Is it different?

Capricious and free-spirited, Mina Tepes is forever trying to intervene. Some would say she interferes. Her attempt to save a friend worsens a war already waging between her people, the Darks, and their reviled overlords, the Mages. Desperate, she turns to the man who saved her life as child–an enemy Mage named Xander.
As part of the ruling class, Xander Fjordson should never have taken notice of Mina, but even as boy, one look into her large dark eyes and he was lost. As an adult, involvement with her has ripped his world to shreds. Though the war she unintentionally instigated has made them enemies, when she comes to him bleeding and injured, he is unable to say no. He puts at risk what is left of his status and his family as he follows her, knowing in the end he’d have to betray her.
Together Xander and Mina begin to unravel terrible secrets as the war escalates. Soon Xander must choose: save his family or the woman who’s come to mean more to him than his own life
