Incandescent,
The first book in the Hidden Races Series
by M.V. Freeman
When fire meets a force of nature an Incandescent is born.
Laurie Hudson gave up “normal” a long time ago. Isolated from friends and family, she becomes a bartender for an upscale restaurant while she fights to suppress her strange affinity for fire. Around new owner Mikhail Petrov, her careful control disintegrates. She is at once drawn to his urbane, cool demeanor and irritated by his overbearing manner. Now she finds all of her hard won choices being taken away as she is catapulted into a world of Mages, Darks, and mysterious Elementals, all working just below the surface of humanity. As she learns to survive, Laurie realizes her freedom could mean the destruction of the frustrating man she’s come to care for.
A formidable figure in this strange world, Tri-Elemental Mikhail Petrov commands earth, air, and water. He doesn’t give a damn what the untrained Fire Elemental Laurie wants. Her rare power is the key to his freedom, and he doesn’t hesitate to seize her for his use—an act that propels him into a war he isn’t ready to fight. The cost could mean his life and the destruction of his people. With the Mages closing in, Mikhail faces a choice: destroy the fledgling relationship with Laurie to gain his coveted freedom, or sacrifice himself for hers.

WHO INSPIRED MY CHARACTERS.
One of the favorite parts of creating my stories is the evolution of the characters I write. I base them from the people I see or find. I used to create my characters from my head, but I have found if I have a real person to relate my characters to; I can far better picture the reality of their movements, expression, and better visualize the color of their hair and eyes. At the same time, I don’t try to describe them too deeply but enough so readers can form their own their own idea of what my characters look like.
That said—I am going to show you what inspired my story, and who inspired my Hero and Heroine, and a bit about them.
My book, INCANDESCENT was inspired by the movie Eastern Promises; a dark movie about human trafficking and Russian Mafia set in England. It was one of the main characters; Nikolai Luzhin, played by Viggo Mortenson who captivated me. I loved his pragmatic attitude, charm, and at times chilling and brutal efficiency.
From this my hero was formed: Mikhail Sergeivich Petrov. (Click here to go see a picture of him. http://bit.ly/1tmYAM4 ) Viggo Mortenson was the perfect inspiration.
Mikhail:
Likes: Vodka, cigars, fine clothes, beautiful women (especially redheads)
Dislikes: Betrayal, ineptness, child abuse, pizza, wearing jeans.
Oddities: Always has a pair of dice with him, collects action figures.
Mikhail has suffered mightily in his life, seeing his family slowly taken from him. Instead of crumbling and breaking him, it created in him an iron will and a focus to find freedom from those who oppressed him and his people. He’ll use anyone or anything to gain it.
Then he discovers Laurie who gives him hope he hasn’t experienced in a very long time.
Which brings me to the heroine: Laurie Hudson. The inspiration for her came after I found Mikhail. Who would he be attracted to or need? A fiery, determined woman. I found her image in the actress Rachelle Lefevre; (See below)
Laurie:
Likes: Sun, shoes, Bartending, her friends, shopping, business, and sharp dressed men.
Dislikes: losing control, eating breakfast, jail.
Oddities: loves reading self-help books.
Laurie wants to fit in, but knows it’s impossible. Estranged from her family, who fears her, she finds a new one with her equally odd friends Nicki and Rachel. She’s found a sense of normalcy working as a bartender, but she yearns for more, knowing it’s too dangerous. She tells herself she’s happy –but she’s not.
Until the night she encounters a very dangerous Russian, who shows her what she is truly capable of.
Do you like having a clear cut vision of the characters you read? Or something less specific?
